Wheels make the most difference to a bike.

Well built wheels improve the ride of any bike: light wheels help you to ride more quickly, while stronger, heavy duty wheels will carry a touring load without problems.

Greens' Bikeshop specialises in touring wheels, using top quality components, properly laced and carefully tensioned and trued. Front wheels can be built with dynamo hubs for night riding.

I specialise in touring wheels. They are also useful for audax, commuting, training and cyclo-cross.

My aim is to supply wheels that will be reliable and long lasting. Therefore, I build them with at least twentyeight spokes, laced tangentially. I only use Sapim stainless steel spokes with brass nipples. At present, I use Ambrosio rims and hubs (130mm OLN), Shimano Deore hubs (135mm OLN) and Rigida rims. I choose my standard components for a combinstion of good quality and value for money.

All The wheels are suitable for 25mm+ tyres. The descriptions of the wheels include the range of compatible tyre sizes.

Rim weights vary. Heavier ones are stronger, but it is not necessary to use the heaviest rims, other than for expedition riding.

The hub is (literally!) the heart of the wheel. As a general rule, if your budget is tight, choose the best hubs you can get, even if it means settling for cheap rims. Rims are expendable; they wear out from braking and can be wrecked by a pothole. If you have good hubs, they will last for years. When your rims wear out, you can have new wheels built.

We usually build wheels with 36 spokes and quick release hubs to suit derailleur geared bikes with rim brakes. If you prefer something else, please tell us in the box below. It is possible to build wheels with combinations of: solid spindles, single speed, fixed gear, hub gears, hub dynamo, disc brakes. If you want us to supply sprockets and tyres, tell us what you want. We'll work out a specification and a price for you.
